Mary Winkler, Husband Killer, Hires Mensa Genius as Defense Attorney

Mrs. Winkler's attorney uses the third grade "the dog ate my homework" defense.

SELMER, Tenn. - Mary Winkler, the woman charged with killing her minister husband, is “very confused and overwhelmed” by what’s happening, her lawyer told NBC News on Tuesday.

She is “very detached, very detached from the gravity of the overall situation, very reserved, very quiet, very confused and overwhelmed,” Steve Forese said on the “Today” show.

Next week, it will probably be "He deserved it and I didn't do it".

  1. I was listening to the news right after this happened and women were calling in
    absolutely sure that this guy was wife beater, no evidence nothing.

  2. Gee...I guess her attorney hasn't had time to coach her in that yet. Based on er photo, it looks like the race card defense is not available, however her complete family tree has not been made public.

  3. Each time a woman kills her spouse the womens groups of the entire world come out of the wood work and cry foul. I also heard the news reports after and read a couple of AOL news comments on the case. Having been called through the years on both sides of these cases until the facts are presented people especially the womens groups need to wait like everyone one else and not assume. According to reports she shot him in the back. I just hope the kids were someplace else and didn't see their mom do this self defense or not. A family and a community has been riped apart.

  8. I just hope this is handled by the evidence given, as it should be, no matter who the persons are or the color. America does not need any more racial problems. I work with many colors and nationalities and do fine. But then I am not loking at those things. I look at the person and Who they are and How they act.

  10. It seems that the double standard is in play. People dont want to think that a wife and mother could have done this for no reason; let's not assume anything, as EB and Susan have said. While it is possible her husband could have beat her, it is equally as possible that she's a sociopathic killer.

I have to say although I am not a big fan of Nancy Grace I watched her show this evening and the woman's lawyer is quite impressive (not a fan of many lawyers either) but he is answering the questions in a very professional manner. Your right C-Mom until the facts are in people should not speculate. And yes, this is a great example of double standards at work in the legal system.

  13. Some may not like my answer but here goes: Many African American Women (I didn't say all) are not married. A good example would be to look at the unadopted children in Foster Care, the number of single unwed mothers on assistance, and the Incareration of African American Males most don't have fathers in their lives and or do not know who the father is. I testified as an expert witness some years back the woman's husband broke into the home after the divorce. He threatened her life she fired shots at the back door. She was facing a murder one conviction. All the evidence pointed in self defense and because she never had a problem with law and worked a good job she was released on parole without having to serve jail time. Having been at the helm of a national organization for women for a number of years our client base was mostly African American Women approximately 75% I can't recall any of them as married. Few graduated high school and even fewer had college degrees. The majority sought services because in my opinion the system didn't always respond the way it should . No one is saying this woman is not a murderer we are saying that before fingers are pointed and the case is tried in the media no one should assume anything.

  15. well it seems to me that race was actually brought into it by someone else so why are you blaming Susan for doing nothing more than sharing her experience. If you think you can prove her wrong than saying it doesn't make it so. If your experience is different let's here about it, but name calling and ad hominem attacks only make you sound more shrill and less intelligent than you really are...white, black...yellow or red.

  17. Point Bozo Barry is if the wife was not white, without hesitation she'd be a murderer. White's not have the same justice system when it comes to many crimes. The system looks different when its white. So yea, RACE does play, she is treated better & more sypathtic because she's white-GET Now!

  22. I for one do not want to jump to any conclusions regarding the identity of #16. If Mrs. Winkler would be as pink as pepto bismol I would still think she is a murderer, based on the published facts at this time.

    I don't read it so I don't know whether you have been unblocked on the PM site? Have you? If so, I might start reviewing it again.

  24. Hello Ann....you out there? ARE there any people of color involved in this case? I just hope she doesn't get away with any half baked insanity defense that fools a sympathic jury. SHE MOVED HER CHILDREN 300 MILES AWAY AND RENTED A TOWNHOUSE AFTER MURDERING HER HUSBAND. Guilty? Hell yes. Even temporarily insane enough to walk? Hell no.

I think after this case, whenever any man or women decide that they are abused, they should gun down their other half while they sleep and watch them bleed to death...just think..all they have to do is cry rape...funky sex acts..financial problems...and theyll be set free..free as a bird.. to fly and function again in society as if nothing ever happened...Oh and oh yes...she should get her kids back...because its going to be really interesting the hell they will have to live with knowing that their mother killed their father....I always wonder how OJ Simpson explains it to his kids...maybe Mary Winkler should chat with him and get some tips!
