Rocket scientists, long considered the gold standard in intelligence among all professionals, are not nearly as smart as originally thought, according to a controversial new study published today by the American Association of Brain Surgeons.  The study, which appears in the organization’s monthly publication, Popular Brain Surgery, is entitled “The Intelligence of Rocket Scientists: Myth Versus Reality,” and suggests that rocket scientists’ reputation for smartness is largely undeserved.

“It does require a superior intellect to function as a rocket scientist,” the article concedes. “Having said that, though, rocket science is not brain surgery.”  The article drew an immediate rebuke from a spokesperson for the American Society of Rocket Scientists, who blasted the study as “state-of-the-art pro-brain surgeon propaganda.”

“As rocket scientists, we take offense at this naked attempt by a devious cabal of opportunistic brain surgeons to supplant us as the smartest people on the planet,” the spokesperson said. “If rocket science is so easy, we’d like to see these so-called brain surgeons give it a try one of these days.”  Professor Davis Logsdon, a University of Minnesota expert who studies the turf wars between rocket scientists and brain surgeons, said that he believes the latest controversy between the two groups has been overplayed.  “The fact of the matter is, the smartest people in the world have always been, and will always be, University of Minnesota experts,” he said.

Let’s get one thing straight: Donald Trump doesn’t want to run for president. Honestly, he doesn’t. Not interested.  But because the country is in such dire straits, he says, the business tycoon and perennial publicity hound just might have no choice. The country needs him.

“For the first time really would think about it. And I am thinking about it. It doesn’t mean I want to do it. I’d prefer not doing it. I’m having a lot of fun doing what I’m doing. It’s a great time to be buying things. I’m buying a lot of things and really having a good time,” Trump told Joy Behar Wednesday on HLN, CNN’s sister network.

“But I hate - you know, I’m very proud of this country. I’m very proud to be an American. And frankly, I hate what I’m seeing. I hate that friends of mine from Europe, from Asia, from all over the world - they’re telling me stories about this country,” the reality television host lamented.   Trump said President Obama particularly embarrassed America when he traveled to Copenhagen a year ago in a failed last-minute bid to secure the 2016 summer Olympics for Chicago.

As President Obama's approval ratings plummet, the democrats chances in the fall elections diminish dramatically to the point that majorities in both the House and Senate are in jeopardy.  Once again the democrats have proven their usual ineptness and greediness.

Howling in protest over Obama Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan’s lack of judging experience, leading Republicans today urged the President to withdraw Kagan and instead nominate Paula Abdul.  “The American people have had years of watching Paula’s judging expertise, and they know that she is fair,” said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.), top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.  “She’s certainly fairer than Simon.”  As to the criticism that sometimes on “American Idol” Ms. Abdul seemed to be not all there and had nothing to say, Sen. Sessions said, “You could say the same thing about Clarence Thomas.”

What if they launched a new high-tech gadget and nobody came?  That's the question the Sony Corporation is asking itself after the disappointing launch Saturday morning of its much-hyped new music playing device, the Sony Walkman Sports Ultra™.

In Sony stores around the world, the company hired additional salesclerks to handle the anticipated crowds - crowds that never materialized.  "So far only three people have come into the store this morning, and two of them were just looking for a bathroom," said Tracy Klugian, a clerk at the Sony store in downtown Chicago.  "I'm kind of like, where is everybody?"

Mr. Klugian said he was puzzled that the new Sony Walkman™, which comes in seven sporty colors and has such features as auto-reverse, has failed to catch on with consumers: "If there's a more awesome device being sold this morning, I'd like to know what it is."  But according to tech insider Zach Felderstein, the tepid reception to the new Sony Walkman™ may be a simple case of bad timing.

"In this business, timing is everything," said Mr. Felderstein, who orgazanized last month's poorly attended tech conference North By Northwest.

Attempting to explain its controversial decision to revamp its history textbooks, The Texas State Board of Education issued an official statement today.  The one-sentence statement reads as follows: “If you were the state responsible for so many dickhead democrats you’d throw out your history books, too.”

Maybe but the Wildcats will have to play better than the slop they put on the court in narrowly winning in OT vs. Robert Morris.

The reputation of the Toyota Motors Corp. received another black eye today as the president of the embattled company missed his scheduled appearance at Congressional hearings after he overshot Washington, D.C. by 150 miles.  Toyota president Akio Toyoda said he was having difficulties with the brakes on his 2010 Toyota Prius, which finally came to rest after crashing into a blacksmith’s shop in Colonial Williamsburg.  In a brief statement to reporters, Mr. Toyoda said, “I knew I should’ve driven my Chevy today.”

In yet another embarrassment, Mr. Toyoda, the grandson of the carmaker’s founder, realized for the first time that his family’s name is spelled differently from the company’s.  Mr. Toyoda said that all members of the Toyoda family would be immediately recalled to fix the spelling error.

A new social network is about to alter the playing field of the social media world, and it’s called PhoneBook.  According to its creators, who invented the network in their dorm room at Berkeley, PhoneBook is the game-changer that will leave Facebook, Twitter and even the much anticipated Google Buzz in a cloud of dust.  “With PhoneBook, you have a book that has a list of all your friends in the city, plus everyone else who lives there,” says Danny Fruber, one of PhoneBook’s creators.  “When you want to chat with a friend, you look them up in PhoneBook, and find their unique PhoneBook number,” Fruber explains.  “Then you enter that number into your phone and it connects you directly to them.”

Another breakout utility of PhoneBook allows the user to arrange face-to-face meetings with his or her friends at restaurants, bars, and other “places,” as Fruber calls them.  “You will be sitting right across from your friend and seeing them in 3-D,” he said.  “It’s like Skype, only without the headset.”  PhoneBook will enable friends to play many games as well, such as charades, cards, and a game Fruber believes will be a breakout: Farm.  “In Farm, you have an actual farm where you raise real crops and livestock,” he says.  “It’s hard work, but it’s more fun than Mafia, where you actually get killed.”

Are the Japs trying to avenge their WWII humiliation?  Hoping to reverse a series of public relations setbacks, Toyota today unveiled a new slogan, “Drive a Toyota.  You’ll Never Stop.”  Company spokesman Hiroshi Kyosuke said that the slogan was chosen after the company considered several others, including “Toyota Puts the Pedal to the Metal.  And Keeps it There.”  Mr. Kyosuke said that the company considered, but then abandoned, the slogan, “Toyota.  The Last Car You’ll Ever Drive.”

In the same week that it launched its much-touted iPad, Apple introduced its latest game-changer to the tech marketplace, a text-sharing device called the CoTex.  "There are a lot of texting devices out there that can absorb data," said Apple founder Steve Jobs.  "But nothing absorbs more than a CoTex."

Mr. Jobs said that when used in conjunction with Apple's just-released mobile device, the AllWays StayFree, "the CoTex has what it takes to handle a heavy flow of information."  When asked about the flurry of new products that Apple has released at the end of January, Mr. Jobs mused, "I guess it's that time of the month."

Good riddance to bad rubbish.  That crybaby needs to hit the unemployment line.   Conan gets job with QVC.  Conan O’Brien is close to an agreement to leave NBC, resolving a stalemate with the network after he refused to host the “Tonight Show” in a later time period, said two people with knowledge of the discussions.  An agreement may be reached by tomorrow, said the people, who asked not to be named because negotiations are private. The talks could still fall apart, said one of the people. NBC will pay about $40 million to O’Brien and members of his staff and will allow him to work at another network, the New York Times reported earlier.

In what some in the White House are calling a "win/win" solution to the nation's airport security and health care reform problems, starting next month U.S. airports will begin conducting full body scans that will double as annual physical checkups.  President Obama announced the breakthrough solution, telling reporters, "With this all-purpose exam, we will be able to find everything from a hidden weapon to a spot on your lung."

After scanning a passenger, Mr. Obama said, "We will either give you a clean bill of health or wrestle you to the ground."  The President added that instituting the body scan/checkup could ward off some terrorists right from the start, "because a lot of them will balk at the $25 co-pay."  But according to Davis Logsdon, who studies terrorism and health care reform at the University of Minnesota, the body scans may attract more terrorists than they deter: "If there's one complaint that terrorists have about al-Qaeda it's that they have lousy benefits."

In the wake of the Christmas Day airline terror attempt, the Department of Homeland Security today said it was instituting a bold new series of security measures, including issuing an official "proof of terrorism" I.D. card.  "All potential terrorists must have the terrorist I.D. card in order to be barred from boarding," said Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano.  "If you want to get on the no-fly list you'll need a completed application and the $25 fee."

Ms. Napolitano said that while the terror suspect's father had warned the U.S. about his son weeks before the incident, the Homeland Security Dept. was tightening rules in that area as well: "In the future, it will be necessary for a terrorist's mom and dad to warn us before we take it seriously."  The Homeland Security chief said that her department would continue to crack down on the primary threat to air safety: shampoo.

"We will be looking out for shampoo like never before," she said.  "If you want to smuggle it on board, you had better hide it with your bomb-making supplies."  She also praised the Department's decision to ban in-flight bathroom use: "One thing every terrorist has in common is that they eventually need to pee."

The United States Senate today unveiled details of its health care plan, tentatively called CompromiseCare^TM:

• Under CompromiseCare^TM, people with no coverage will be allowed to keep their current plan.

• Medicare will be extended to 55-year-olds as soon as they turn 65.

• You will have access to cheap Canadian drugs if you live in Canada.

• States whose names contain vowels will be allowed to opt out of the plan.

• You get to choose which doctor you cannot afford to see.

• You will not have to be pre-certified to qualify for cremation.

• A patient will be considered "pre-existing" if he or she already exists.

• You'll be free to choose between medications and heating fuel.

• Patients can access quality health care if they can prove their name is "Reid" or "Pelosi".

• You will have access to natural remedies, such as death.  

The Birds win should cement the division title and possibly result in the Romo the homo led Cowboys missing the playoffs yet again.  Some great individual performances:

Donovan McNabb - A very good performance from McNabb. He completed 17 of 26 passes for 275 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. McNabb showed good patience and trust in his offensive line on the big plays down the field. He hit Brent Celek for a 23-yard play and connected on the two huge plays to DeSean Jackson: a 44 yarder and the 60-yard touchdown. Great read and throw, finding Reggie Brown over the middle for 19 yards on the fourth-quarter drive. He also did a good job of buying time and finding receivers down the field throughout. overthrew him a little.

Michael Vick - He looked as comfortable as he has all season on the 32-yard throw to Jackson, which set up first touchdown. Nice play-fake and perfect throw. Vick looked a little hesitant on the 3rd-and-3 carry in the second, but eventually he got far enough outside to pick up the first down. He also showed good patience on the fourth-quarter drive, picking up 5 yards to set up the Leonard Weaver TD.

Leonard Weaver - Tremendous performance from Weaver in all aspects. He really put his stamp on the game with five touches on that 12-play drive in the fourth quarter. He was excellent as usual as a chipper/blocker. Weaver made a nice block on the Vick touchdown at the end of the first half. Nine carries for 33 yards and four catches for 26 overall.

Todd Herremans - He really played well and was probably the Eagles' most impressive run blocker. Herremans had several good blocks on Weaver runs. He got just enough of a linebacker on the first-quarter touchdown to Celek. And he pushed a DB out of the play on Vick's TD run at the end of the first half.


Brent Celek - Five catches for 64 yards and a touchdown. He has a toughness play almost every week. Sunday, it was the TD where he met a linebacker and a DB at the 3 yard line and ran them over to get to the end zone. Celek had the big 23-yard catch to set up the TD at the end of the first half. He did a better job than last week as a blocker.

Last but NOT least:

DeSean Jackson -  Just a ridiculous performance. Jackson had a hand in pretty much every score. The 60-yard touchdown was huge. Overall, six catches for 178 yards and a TD. Oh yeah, there was that punt return too.

In one of the largest mass demonstrations in recent history, over one million women claiming to have had sexual liaisons with Tiger Woods marched on Washington today.  Determined to show that they are a political force to be reckoned with, the coalition of nightclub hostesses, cocktail waitresses and lingerie models stopped traffic for hours as they marched to the Capitol.

Shandy Shanoyne, a 22-year-old thong publicist who had an on-again, off-again relationship with Mr. Woods, said that she organized the march to demand benefits, such as health care and workmen's compensation, for the golfer's many girlfriends.  "We are sick and tired of being told to take our names off our voicemail greetings," she said.  "We have demands and they must be met.  Quickly.  Huge."

According to Ms. Shanoyne, the million or so mistresses of Mr. Woods who showed up at the march are just the tip of the iceberg: "A new girlfriend of Tiger's holds a press conference every eleven seconds."

I haven't heard Obama complain about his chance to check out that chick up close and personal.

My flight was being served by an obviously gay flight attendant, who seemed to put everyone in a good mood as he served us food and drinks.  As the plane prepared to descend, he came swishing down the aisle and told us that 'Captain Marvey has asked me to announce that he'll be landing the big scary plane shortly, so lovely people, if you could just put your trays up, that would be super.' On his trip back up the aisle, he noticed this well-dressed and rather Arabic looking woman hadn't moved a muscle. 'Perhaps you didn't hear me over those big brute engines but I asked you to raise your trazy-poo, so the main man can` pitty-pat us on the ground.'  She calmly turned her head and said, 'In my country, I am called a Princess and I take orders from no one.'

To which (I swear) the flight attendant replied, without missing a beat, 'Well, sweet-cheeks, in my country I'm called a Queen, so I outrank you. Tray-up, Bitch'

The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep.  Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, "Kemo Sabe,look towards sky, what you see?"  The Lone Ranger replies, "I see millions of stars."

"What that tell you?" asked Tonto.  The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, "Astronomically speaking,it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise,it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning. Theologically, the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.

This didn't have to happen for the Phillies, this return to the World Series, and all those people telling you to savor these moments because they are rare and fleeting are correct.

The players know it, too. They know how capricious the game can be, an injury that happens here, a trade that works out there, and no one can predict which teams will be tapped on the head by the magic wand in a given year. Teams that get this far have to be good, and the Phillies are certainly that, but they have to be lucky as well. That's why there are always sighs of relief mixed in with the whooping celebrations of the clubhouses. The game didn't decide to hate them this time around.

Reminding Philadelphia fans that the baseball gods are not always kind seems unnecessary, as if two wonderful years of enjoying Charlie Manuel guide his silver ship can blot out the long seasons of watching Nick Leyva or Terry Francona crash their rudderless vessels into the rocks.

No, this is special and rare, and for further reference as the World Series approaches, it's worth wondering whatever happened to the Tampa Bay Rays, last year's opponent. The Rays, having shed the Devil from their nickname along with the demons of a losing tradition, came into the World Series billed as a young team on the rise. Maybe a little premature in their arrival at a stage that large, but definitely not out of place in those surroundings. The Rays had made it, and they weren't going anywhere soon.

Except that's not exactly the way it worked out.

This could have been the Phillies' fate when they were also a young team on the rise in 2005 or 2006, trying to find a way to build around a homegrown corps of talent. General manager Pat Gillick fussed and fiddled with the roster a lot before the tumblers of the lock fell into place. If figuring that Adam Eaton and Freddy Garcia might be the answer isn't the definition of trial and error, then perhaps it is Wes Helms and Rod Barajas.

In any case, it worked out for the Phillies and has continued to work, even as they have struggled to keep the starting rotation together with one breath only to find the bullpen falling apart with the next. The offense has been a constant, but that is because they were sharp enough to replace Pat Burrell with Raul Ibanez, and lucky enough to have Jayson Werth spectacularly complete a comeback from an injury that nearly ended his career.

With the Rays, things weren't quite as fortunate this season. Tampa Bay set team records this season in runs, home runs, extra-base hits, walks, stolen bases, and on-base percentage, and as soon as the season was over the Rays fired their hitting coach. Now, that's interesting.

One season after winning 97 games, the Rays dipped to 84-78. They came out of the box with a 9-14 April, revived through the middle of the season, but then fell apart in September after management traded away pitcher Scott Kazmir and after slugger Carlos Pena was lost to injury. In one stretch, the Rays lost 17 of 21 games, finally finishing 19 games behind the Yankees in the AL East and 11 games behind the wild-card Red Sox.

The difference between the Rays and the Phillies might be partly the difference between the AL East and the NL East, too. Stumble for a little while in Tampa Bay's division and those energy eaters from New York and Boston will leave their huge carbon footprints all over you. The Phils are in a more forgiving position, but they have to be credited for taking advantage of it, and their 93 regular-season wins are still the fourth-highest in franchise history since the turn of the century.

For the second straight season, the Phillies won't end the year making excuses, regardless of the Series outcome. You can't say the same for the Dodgers, who had the best record in the National League this season, glided past the Cardinals in the first round, but barely made a dent on the championship series.

Just as they did in 2008, the Dodgers took the five-game dismissal with a cool aplomb, which partly explains why they keep getting dismissed. Back home, where the fans are already more interested in how Kobe will blend with Andrew Bynum, there's no retribution from the town that put the LA in la-di-dah.

What would fans in Philadelphia call a good team that kept getting close but never reached the final goal? Oh, that's right. The Eagles.

There's the best reminder that these runs at the championship don't have to happen. Take a glance across the street from Citizens Bank Park at Lincoln Financial Field. If that doesn't make you savor the moment, nothing will.

SHALL WE HIRE A MONUMENT ENGRAVER TO GO TO ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY AND ADD THE MISSING WORDS? 

THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM AN APPALLED OBSERVER: 

Today I went to visit the new World War II Memorial in Washington , DC. I got an unexpected history lesson. Because I'm a baby boomer, I was one of the youngest in the crowd.  Most were the age of my parents, Veterans of 'the greatest war,' with their families. It was a beautiful day, and people were smiling and happy to be there. Hundreds of us milled around the memorial, reading the inspiring words of Eisenhower and Truman that are engraved there.

On the Pacific side of the memorial, a group of us gathered to read the words President Roosevelt used to announce the attack on Pearl Harbor: 

Yesterday, December 7, 1941-- a date which will live in infamy--theUnited States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked. 

One elderly woman read the words aloud: 

'With confidence in our armed forces, with the abounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph.' 

But as she read, she suddenly turned angry. 'Wait a minute,' she said, 'they left out the end of the quote. They left out the most important part.Roosevelt ended the message with 'so help us God.' 

Her husband said, 'You are probably right. We're not supposed to say things like that now.' 

'I know I'm right,' she insisted. 'I remember the speech.' The two looked dismayed,
shook their heads sadly and walked away. 

Listening to their conversation, I thought to myself, 'Well, it has been over 50 years; she's probably forgotten.' 

But she had not forgotten. She was right. 

I went home and pulled out the book my book club is reading --- 'Flags of Our Fathers' by James Bradley. It's all about the battle at Iwo Jima . 
     
 
I haven't gotten too far in the book. It's tough to read because it's a graphic description of the WWII battles in the Pacific. 

But right there it was on page 58. Roosevelt 's speech to the nation ends in 'so help us God.' 

The people who edited out that part of the speech when they engraved it on the memorial could have fooled me. I was born after the war! But they couldn't fool the people who were there.   Roosevelt 's words are engraved on their hearts. 

Now I ask: 'WHO GAVE THEM TH E RIGHT TO CHANGE THE WORDS OF HISTORY?????????' 

Ted has now been sober for 4 weeks.

As the world responded with a mixture of surprise and amazement to the announcement of President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize, Nobel insiders revealed that the President's "beer summit" at the White House put him over the top.  "The committee was definitely split down the middle right up until the end," said Agot Valle, a Norwegian politician and member of the five-person Nobel committee.  "Some of them were still quite upset about that nasty business with the Somali pirates."

But, according to Ms. Valle, "someone brought up the beer summit, and we all agreed that that was awesome."  Ms. Valle said she hoped that Mr. Obama's victory would be seen not only as a victory for him, but "as a tribute to the healing power of beer."

Ms. Valle acknowledged that the President's win was widely considered an upset, with most pundits having expected the prize to go to Mad Men or 30 Rock.

So why were they ranked 10th in last week's rankings with Joe Flacco's AFC-best scoring offense so improved? This defense giving up 50 points in the first two games without Rex Ryan calling plays was unnerving, so it was nice to see the normal Ravens defense back last week. RECORD IS JUST RIGHT: The Ravens were one of my favorite teams heading into this season. So why were they ranked 10th in last week's rankings with Joe Flacco's AFC-best scoring offense so improved?
