Surge of 2007 Cliches' to Eliminate in 2008 New Year

@ 07:23 PM (86 months, 4 days ago)

A "surge" of overused words and phrases formed a "perfect storm" of "post-9/11" cliches in 2007, according to a U.S. university's annual list of words and phrases that deserve to be banned.

Choosing from among 2,000 submissions, the public relations department at Michigan's Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie targeted 19 affronts to the English language in its well-known jab at the worlds of media, sports, advertising and politics.

The contributors gave first prize to the phrase "a perfect storm," saying it was numbingly applied to virtually any notable coincidence.

"Webinar" made the list as a tiresome non-word combining Web and seminar that a contributor said "belongs in the same school of non-thought that brought us e-anything and i-anything."

Similarly, the list-makers complained about the absurd comparisons commonly phrased "x is the new y," as in "(age) 70 is the new 50" or "chocolate is the new sex." "Fallacy is the new truth," commented one contributor.

Sagging under weight of overuse
Some words and phrases sagged under the weight of overuse, contributors said, citing the application of "organic" to everything from computer software to dog food.

In the same vein, decorators offering to add "pop" with a touch of color need new words, the list-makers said.

Such phrases as "post 9/11" and "surge" have also outlived their usefulness, they said. Surge emerged in reference to adding U.S. troops in Iraq but has come to explain the expansion of anything.

Other contributors took umbrage at the phrase to "give back" as applied to charitable gestures, usually by celebrities.

"The notion has arisen that as one's life progresses, one accumulates a sort of deficit balance with society which must be neutralized by charitable works or financial outlays," one said.

"Back in the day" raised hackles for being applied to recent trends rather than historical events.

Other teenage linguistic indiscretions such as the often meaningless use of "random" and "sweet" raised the ire of list-makers, as did the pointless "it is what it is."

Reporters were chided for skipping out on detail by describing an event or parting as "emotional," and for misapplying "decimate" when they mean annihilate or destroy, not the word's true meaning of to lose a fraction.

Sports announcers were urged to drop "throw under the bus" when assigning blame to a player. "It is a call for the media to start issuing a thesaurus to everyone in front of a camera," a contributor said.

And finally, any self-respecting writer would groan at being labeled a "wordsmith" who engages in "wordsmithing," the list-makers said.

Jesse Lee Peterson on Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans

@ 09:23 PM (94 months, 19 hours ago)

I don't know the man who wrote this, but I looked at his picture and read it with my mouth hanging open. He says things here that no white man could ever write and keep his job as a writer .

It can be verified at Snopes.com:

By The Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson
Say a hurricane is about to destroy the city you live in.
Two questions:
What would you do?
What would you do if you were black?
Sadly, the two questions don't have the same answer.
To the first: Most of us would take our families out of that city quickly to protect them from danger. Then, able-bodied men would ret urn to help others in need, as wives and others cared for children, elderly, infirm and the like.
For better or worse, Hurricane Katrina has told us the answer to the second question. If you're black and a hurricane is about to destroy your city, you'll probably wait for the government to save you.
This was not always the case. Prior to 40 years ago, such a pathetic performance by the black community in a time of crisis would have been inconceivable. The first response would have come from black men. They would take care of their families, bring them to safety, and then help the rest of the community. Then local government would come in.
No longer. When 75 percent of New Orleans residents had left the city, it was primarily immoral, welfare-pampered blacks that stayed behind and waited for the government to bail them out. This, as we know, did not turn out good results.
Enter Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan. Jackson and Farrakhan laid blame on "racist" President Bush. Farrakhan actually proposed the idea that the government blew up a levee so as to kill blacks and save whites. The two demanded massive governmental spending to rebuild New Orleans, above and beyond the federal government's proposed $60 billion. Not only that, these two were positioning themselves as the gatekeepers to supervise the dispersion of funds. Perfect: Two of the most dishonest elite blacks in America, "overseeing" billions of dollars. I wonder where that money will end up.
Of course, if these two were really serious about laying blame on government, they should blame the local one. Responsibility to perform legally and practically fell first on the mayor of New Orleans. We are now all familiar with Mayor Ray Nagin, the black who likes to yell at President Bush for failing to do Nagin's job. The facts, unfortunately, do not support Nagin's wailing. As the Washington Times puts it, "recent reports show [Nagin] failed to follow through on his own city's emergency-response plan, which acknowledged that thousands of the city's poorest residents would have no way to evacuate the city."
One wonders how there was "no way" for these people to evacuate the city. We have photographic evidence telling us otherwise. You've probably seen it by now the photo showing 2,000 parked school buses, unused and underwater. How much planning does it require to put people on a bus and leave town, Mayor Nagin?
Instead of doing the obvious, Mayor Nagin (with no positive contribution from Gov. Kathleen Blanco, the other major leader vested with responsibility to address the hurricane disaster) loaded remaining new Orleans residents into the Superdome and the city's convention center. We know how that plan turned out.
About five years ago, in a debate before the National Association of Black Journalists, I stated that if whites were to just leave the United States and let blacks run the country, they would turn America into a ghetto within 10 years. The audience, shall we say, disagreed with me strongly. Now I have to disagree with me. I gave blacks too much credit. It took a mere three days for blacks to turn the Superdome and the convention center into ghettos, rampant with theft, rape and murder.
President Bush is not to blame for the rampant immorality of blacks. Had New Orleans' black community taken action, most would have been out of harm's way. But most were too lazy, immoral and trifling to do anything productive for themselves.
All Americans must tell blacks this truth. It was blacks' moral poverty not their material poverty that cost them dearly in New Orleans. Farrakhan, Jackson, and other race hustlers are to be repudiated for they will only perpetuate this problem by stirring up hatred and applauding moral corruption. New Orleans, to the extent it is to be rebuilt, should be remade into a dependency-free, morally strong city where corruption is opposed and success is applauded. Blacks are obligated to help themselves and not depend on the government to care for them. We are all obligated to tell them so.

Couric: Told to F Herself by Elizabeth Edwards - Damn Right

@ 01:38 AM (95 months, 7 days ago)

Elizabeth Edwards wants to be clear: She made the choice to stick with her husband's campaign for president after learning her cancer had returned.

"I think that people who are critical like to think that John dragged me kicking and fighting the whole way, that I'm somehow disappointed in this. I'm not disappointed in this," she said Monday.

It was the couple's first campaign trip to New Hampshire, a key early-voting state, since announcing last month that Elizabeth Edwards' breast cancer, diagnosed at the end of the 2004 campaign, had returned in her bones. Democrat John Edwards stayed in the race, drawing both praise from fellow cancer survivors and questions about whether that was the right choice.

Speaking to reporters after her husband's town hall meeting, Elizabeth Edwards, 57, said at decision time, she went first.

"He let me make it first, I think, because he wanted to make certain it was mine and I wasn't just deferring to him," she said. "This is what I wanted to do."

"When I have my show, I will have Couric on as a guest and bitch slap the fraud", said a smiling Mrs. Edwards.

Jim Leyland of the Tigers Has a Real Strategy - Democrats use strategy of ambiguity on Iraq - No Plan - Just Criticism

@ 11:12 PM (101 months, 17 hours ago)

This is the first honest thing said or written by a demlib in a long time.  Jim Leyland has more intellectual honesty than a 25 man roster of demlibs.  Why bother with facts and specifics when ambiguous innuendo filled criticism works.  Sounds nazi like to me.  Stir the pot.  Criticize a plan while not having one.  The demlibs are AFRAID to even say they have a strategy because they have NO ANSWERS if they would be asked questions.  Chickenshits.

Republicans have taken a battering over Iraq, but it's not because voters believe Democrats have a clear strategy for ending the conflict and bringing American soldiers home.

"If you ask people out on the street what the message is, they wouldn't know," said Joan Lowery, a 60-year-old insurance company manager, at a recent Democratic fund-raiser in Cincinnati.

Lowery is not alone. Only a quarter of Americans think Democrats in the Congress have a clear plan for Iraq, far less than the 36 percent who believe the president has one, a USA Today/Gallup poll in mid-September found.

Ambiguity has been part of the Democratic strategy on Iraq all along and has worked quite well, they said.

"For a lot of Democrats it is a very successful strategy to simply mirror the voters' underlying discontent with the war, but not to offer specifics that make them a vulnerable target," said Matthew Woessner, an assistant professor of public policy at Pennsylvania State University.

He cited the Pennsylvania race for the U.S. Senate as an example. The Democratic challenger, Bob Casey, running against Republican incumbent Rick Santorum, has opposed the status quo but been vague about what to do about Iraq.

"For Casey it has been a very effective strategy, because Casey knows that he is in a position to capitalize on the president's weakness on Iraq, without giving Santorum specific targets to fire at," Woessner said.

When Democratic politicians like Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania offered detailed plans, they gave Republicans the opportunity to expose them to public scrutiny.

"It is when they become specific," Woessner said, "that they ... open themselves up to criticism."

"It is fear that keeps them from having a clear position," said Paulette Meier, 55, after a meeting of religious liberals in Cincinnati. "They are afraid of being seen as cut and run."

Amnesty International Get it Right re: hezbollah Committed WAR CRIMES....Say WHAT?

@ 12:50 PM (101 months, 26 days ago)

In a clearly shocking development, Amnesty International took a logical and sensibile position.  Is the sky falling in?  Did Humpty Dumpty fall off the wall again?  Odds, it will change its mind.

Amnesty International on Thursday accused Hezbollah forces of war crimes and “serious violations of international humanitarian law” during the Lebanon war, including indiscriminate rocket attacks and “deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian objects.”  Amnesty said its assessment of Hezbollah was based on “firsthand information from visits to Israel and Lebanon, interviews with dozens of victims, official statements, discussions with Israeli and Lebanese military and government officials as well as senior Hezbollah officials, information from nongovernment groups and media reports.”

President Bush Dissolves FEMA and Subcontracts New Orleans Cleanup to hezbollah - Ray Nagin goes into Hiding

@ 04:40 PM (102 months, 24 days ago)

President Bush may not be a good talker but can sometimes come up with some very logical strategerie.

To enter southern Lebanon these days, you drive down roads where traffic is directed by young men in gray Hezbollah civil defense corps T-shirts and past bulldozers from the Holy War Reconstruction Co. Days after guns fell silent, Hezbollah has emerged as the lead player in the cleanup of towns and villages in southern Lebanon. It has the volunteers, owns the equipment and has spent years burnishing its image as the champion of ordinary people, from poor tobacco farmers to doctors and lawyers, who see Hezbollah as much more than a militia.-Los Angeles Times

Upon reading this, the President compared hezbollah to FEMA and FEMA lost and was gone the same day.  The brilliant stroke was in bringing hezbollah to New Orleans.  At less than half the cost of FEMA doing virtually nothing, great strides have already been made in New Orleans.  hezbollah payments are being held in escrow pending work completion and hezbollah members leaving the United States without any damage of any kind anywhere.  hezbollah is only too glad to get the bucks.

One of the first things hezbollah has done is preventing Nagin from doing any further damage.  Negociations regarding hezbollah taking Nagin with them when they are finished are ongoing.

New York Times Lauded by bin Laden, muslims, islam, al queda, hezbollah and the Rest of the terrorists for Spearheading Spy Network

@ 12:01 PM (103 months, 15 days ago)

Imagine the spying dollars saved by the bunch of creeps.  And some of other are stupid enough to finance it.  Not me.  Never have never will.

A nationwide boycott of this withering dinosaur may be the final step in addition to technology, the internet and alternative media to shut it down for good.  Centuries of holier than thou biased preached rather than news reporting has done incalcuable damage to the United States.  The Constitution protects the NYT.  Economics can eliminate the NYT.  Speak with your dollars and tell your uninformed or too lazy to cancel friends.

Fortunately the next generation already knows better and the NYT is on it's way out finally.  Readership is declining.  It's desperation is beginning to parallel Dan Rather's.  Goodbye and good riddance NYT.

Who is America's most dangerous traitor?  Jane Fonda, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, the New York Times, Benedict Arnold, Dan Rather, Star Jones or Barbara Walters?

USS New York - Poised to Take Death to bin laden and assorted murdering muslim terrorist islamist

@ 12:53 AM (104 months, 1 day ago)

With a year to go before it even touches the water, the Navy's amphibious assault ship USS New York has already made history. It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

USS New York is about 45 percent complete and should be ready for launch in mid-2007. Katrina disrupted construction when it pounded the Gulf Coast last summer, but the 684-foot vessel escaped serious damage, and workers were back at the yard near New Orleans two weeks after the storm.

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

"It would be fitting if the first mission this ship would go on is to make sure that bin Laden is taken out, his terrorist organization is taken out," said Glenn Clement, a paint foreman. "He came in through the back door and knocked our towers down and (the New York) is coming right through the front door, and we want them to know that."
